Do third-party SFP modules work in Peplink routers?

Yes. Peplink does not lock its SFP cages to vendor-coded optics, so third-party modules are accepted. The cage type, speed and reach still have to match, and some module types such as fixed-rate copper often fail to link. Every module The Tech Factory sells has been tested on Peplink hardware by our engineering team.

What is the difference between single-mode and multi-mode fibre?

Single-mode fibre carries one light path down a thin core, giving lower loss and reach of 10 km and beyond. Multi-mode has a wider core with cheaper optics but short reach, typically 300 to 550 m. The module, patch lead and installed fibre must all be the same mode.

Why do some copper RJ45 SFP modules not work in Peplink ports?

Our testing found fixed-rate copper SFP modules often fail to link in Peplink SFP ports. Auto-negotiating, speed-sensing copper modules link reliably, so those are the only copper modules we supply.

A direct attach cable is a fixed copper cable with an SFP or SFP+ module moulded on each end, used to join two units a few metres apart in the same rack. It is the cheapest short hop and needs no separate patch lead.
