The Peplink Balance 310X (LTEA) is the LTE-Advanced Cat-20 variant of the 310X enterprise router family. Same multi-gig branch chassis as the Balance 310X 5G, but with an embedded LTE-A Cat-20 cellular modem instead of 5G NR. The right call for branches where 5G coverage isn't deployed yet, where the carrier 5G plan economics don't justify the upgrade, or where Cat-20 LTE delivers all the cellular bandwidth the branch needs (200 Mbps to 1 Gbps real-world). Why pick LTEA Cat-20 over 5G
Cat-20 LTE-A delivers 2 Gbps theoretical peak and 600-900 Mbps real-world in good 4G mid-band coverage. 5G NR can deliver more, but only when 5G mid-band is lit up at the cell tower AND your carrier plan unlocks 5G AND the device sits in good signal. In real-world UK and EU coverage with strong 4G carrier aggregation, Cat-20 routinely outperforms 5G NR in marginal-coverage sites. Pick Cat-20 LTEA when:
- 5G coverage at the branch site is patchy or absent
- Carrier 5G plan pricing isn't justified for the workload
- Real-world 600-900 Mbps cellular is sufficient (most branches: yes)
- You're building a branch estate now but want hardware that can swap to a 5G modem variant later via the FlexModule path
